Atari files for bankruptcy

Atari, one of the pioneers in gaming announced today that they filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. They are aiming to keep the US operations separate from the french parent holding company Atari SA. Within the next few months they are going to sell their assets such as Pong, Asteroids, Missile Command and other titles. They may even sell their logo, leaving them with just a name.

I hardly thought about Atari in recent years. I didn’t even know they were around still. I figured the majority of people forgot about them, and only cared about current systems like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Atari’s last released console was the Atari Jaguar back in 1993. It’s rival Nintendo released its latest console, the Wii U in November 2012.

The future of Atari US is focusing on iOS and Android games, the company said. Looks like they are no longer going to be focusing on hardware.  Do you think Atari will make games for other platforms like Xbox 360 and other consoles, Mac and PC eventually if they get their health back?

The company has announced in the past they have upcoming mobile games based on Rollercoaster Tycoon and Atari Casino. They are seeking 5.25 million dollars in funding for their new ventures. Do you think Atari will save itself and be a success again or fade into the dust?
